Biography: Pierre Gouthiere was the son of a saddlemaker and married the widow of his master in order to inherit the workshop where he trained. Not long after the inheritance, he was given the title of Gilder to the King by Louis XV. He also worked for the Comte d’Artois, the Marquis de Marigny, and Dominque Daguerre. Gouthiere invented a new type of bronze chasing that produced a matte finish on his pieces. He made many types of objects in this fashion including furniture mounts, ornaments, and vase mounts. Although he was very prosperous early on, when Gouthiere’s two major clients died in 1775, his finances began to falter. He was forced into bankruptcy because he never received the substantial amount of money owed to him by his mistress, Madame du Barry. He died in poverty while fighting the battle wit her heirs in 1813.
