Biography:
Jan Van Goyen’s travels throughout Holland and France in his youth introduced him to the art trends of his time. He taught many younger artists and co-founded the Dutch School of landscape painters along with Salomon van Ruysdael. Van Goyen’s early paintings were distinct in their use of muted and dark colors. His later work involved a more varied color palette. Although he created many works in his time, Van Goyen’s was not a talented businessman and he died in debt in 1656.
