Biography: Caspar Gras was trained as a goldsmith by his father and then became an apprentice embosser at the court of Archduke Maximilian III in Bad Mergentheim. In 1610, he was appointed Court Embosser and received most of the commissions from the court, which included relief sculpture, life-size figure, equestrian statues and fountains. Gras also produced small-scale works called Kunstkammer pieces that were created for collection. After the death of Emperor Leopold V and the Thirty Years’ War, Gras received little business as a result of his country’s financial depression.
