Biography: Born in Madrid as Jose Victoriano Gonzalez, Juan Gris began his artistic career as a magazine illustrator. Beginning in 1912 under the influence of Picasso and Matisse, Gris lead the development of Synthetic Cubism, often using collage elements as well as distortion. In the 1920’s, he moved to Boulogne to expand his talents into the costume, set design, sculpture and book illustration fields.
