Biography:
French painter, Pierre-Narcisse Guerin enjoyed a great deal of success during his lifetime. He won the Prix de Rome in 1797 and eventually developed a style reminiscent of Jacques-Louis David’s. In true neoclassical style, Guerin preferred to paint scenes from classical history and mythology. He became director of the French Academy in Rome in 1822 and also became a baron in 1829. In addition, Guerin was a popular teacher, his pupils including Gericault and Delacroix. His reputation was at its height during his lifetime and virtually disappeared after his death in 1833
