Biography:
Constantin Guys spent most of his early life traveling and working various jobs. He fought in the Greek War of Independence in the 1820’s. Then in 1855, he worked for the Illustrated London News as a correspondent for the Crimean War. He settled in Paris later that decade and began publishing drawings of society life in several journals. He was admired by a number of famous artists of his day, including Degas, Manet, and Baudelaire. The latter gave Guys the nickname The Painter of Modern Life and wrote an essay about him with the same title. Despite his reputation, Guys struggled to make a living and died in poverty.
