Biography: After studying at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad, Faik Hassan was given a scholarship to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and graduated in 1938. While in France, Hassan came across the work of the Cubists and Impressionists, but also studied traditional forms of landscapes and genre subjects. He returned to his alma mater in Baghdad to head the painting and sculpture department after graduation. He also established the Pioneers Group in 1950 and the Corners Group in 1962, the latter’s goal being to focus on social and political issues. He created the mosaic titled Celebration of Victory in Tiran Square when Iraq became a republic. Hassan continued painting in the Impressionist style at the end of his career.
