Biography: Son of astronomer and scientist, Sir William Herschel, Sir John Herschel followed in his father’s footsteps and entered the University of Cambridge in 1809. He was a talented chemist who discovered the action of hyposulfite of soda on silver salts in 1819, which was eventually used as a fixing agent in photography. Herschel also developed the photographic process in 1839, separately from its credited inventor, William Henry Fox Talbot. He became a founding member of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1820. He spent the 1830’s investigating astronomy on the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. He was appointed master of the Mint in 1850, but had to resign six years later due to failing health.
