Biography:
Jan van der Heyden moved to Amsterdam in 1650 and began painting still-lifes. However, he is most well known for being the first artist to paint cityscapes. He painted these architectural views mostly in the 1660’s. Van der Heyden traveled to Flanders and Germany where he absorbed developments in Italian architectural painting. In 1670 he joined the Amsterdam civic administration and designed streetlights and fire engines. Van der Heyden is also credited with inventing the hose.
