Nationality: British
Movement: Abstract Art
Media: Painting
Influences:
Biography: Roger Hilton was a British-German painter who first studied at the Slade School before attending the Bissiere School in Paris during the 1930’s. He began painting abstracts after 1950 based on his many visits to Paris and also the influence of Mondrian, whose work he encountered while in the Netherlands in 1953. From 1955 to 1956, his work was shaped by the work of the St. Ives School. After 1961, Hilton began painted lively female nudes that disappointed many of his followers at the time but are now some of his most famous works. The last years of his life were spent bedridden from a muscular disease, but he continued to paint in gouache until his death in 1975.
