Biography: After training as a teacher in Chicago and New York, Lewis Wickes Hine developed an interest in documentary photography while researching with students on Ellis Island. He established a studio in upstate New York in 1912 and devoted himself to sociological photography. He was the photographer for the National Child Labor Committee for ten years and was one of the first to use the medium as a documentary tool. He freelanced for the American Red Cross from 1918 and throughout the 1930’s. Hine was appointed the head photographer for the National Research Project of the Works Project Administration in 1936. As government and corporate commissions began to dwindle, Hine encountered professional and financial struggles.
