Biography: After studying in New Zealand and receiving praise for her work, Frances Mary Hodgkins traveled throughout Europe, where she furthered her training in Paris and London. She admired the work of Matisse and imitated his impressionist style in her later genre scenes, still-lifes, and landscapes. Hodgkins was revered as a leading figure of the Romantic style.
