Biography:
Irish born, Nathaniel Hone studied in Italy from 1750 to 1752 before settling in London. He became a pioneer member of the Royal Academy in 1768. His reputation relies mostly on one painting, The Conjurer, which is a satirical look at Reynolds’s habit of taking poses from the Old Masters’ paintings. The painting was accepted at the Royal Academy but was eventually removed at the request of Angelica Kauffmann who claimed a new background figure was painted in her image. To protest this, Hone held the first solo exhibition in Britain on St. Martin’s Lane.
