Biography:
Jean-Antoine Houdon learned his trade in Paris under sculptors Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne and Jean-Baptiste Pigalle. He won the Prix de Rome and worked there from 1764 to 1768 where he was influenced by antiquity and Renaissance sculpture, primarily Michelangelo. He worked with marble, bronze, plaster, and clay. Houdon joined the Academie Royale in 1771 and became a professor seven years later. He created numerous portrait busts that were appreciated for their realism and personality. Houdon visited the United States in 1785 at the request of Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin where he spent fourteen days at Mount Vernon creating a statue of George Washington. He barely survived the French Revolution and retired in 1814.
