Biography: Arthur Hughes gained popularity as a painter and illustrator in the 1750’s. He was considered the most renowned of the Pre-Raphaelite supporters. His two paintings, April Love and The Long Engagement, are well known today for their strength in drawing and poetic color choice. Hughes’s work declined after 1870 and he withdrew from society for the remainder of his life.
