Biography:
Simon Hurtrelle’s father was a sculptor who encouraged his son to enter the Academie Royale in Rome. He then studied at the Academie de France in Rome from 1673 to 1682. One of the academy’s most promising students, he was admitted to the Italian Accademia di San Luca. Hurtrelle created antique-inspired vases based on models from the royal garden at Versailles and became committed to the classical style. He returned to France to work for Louis XIV at Versailles, the chateau de Marly and the church of Les Invalides. He joined the Academie Royal in 1687 and was granted full membership three years later. Hurtrelle preferred to work in bronze and marble.
