Biography: Born in Montreal, Alexander Young Jackson was a commercial artist before he moved to Chicago and attended the Art Institute. He traveled to Paris in 1907 to train under Jean-Paul Laurens at the Academie Julien, then returned to Canada and settled in Toronto in 1913. Seven years later, he founded the Group of Seven, an influential group in modern Canadian art. Jackson served in World War I as a war artist. After his military service, he continued to paint unique and bold Canadian landscapes.
