Biography: Born in the Netherlands, Juan de Flandes was first recorded on the art scene in Spain in 1496. He was employed by Queen Isabella of Castile. One of his greatest pieces, a miniature portable altarpiece, was created for her. It consisted of forty-seven panels, of which twenty-seven have survived but are widely separated. After the Queen died in 1504, Juan de Flandes worked for several churches elsewhere in Spain.
