Biography: Filippo Juvarra was trained in his father’s silversmith shop and was ordained as a priest in 1703. He was a talented drawer and began studying architecture at the age of twenty-five. He then moved to Rome and studied under the city’s foremost Baroque architect and began establishing his own reputation for stage design. Juvarra was named First Architect to the King of Sicily in 1714. He became known internationally and his output was extraordinary. He was summoned by Philip V of Spain in 1735, but died suddenly before he could finish his project.
