Biography:
Jan van Kessel II was taught by his uncle, Jan Brueghel the Younger before joining the Antwerp’s painters’ guild in 1645. He specialized in small pictures of floral still lifes and also allegorical pieces that showed various aspects of the natural world. He worked from nature and used scientific texts as sources in order to achieve his high standard for attention to detail.
