Biography: One of the leading Austrian artists of his time, Gustav Klimt was born in Vienna and trained at the School of Applied Arts. He began his career as a decorative painter, his work seen at the Burgtheater and the Kunsthistorisches Musuem. With the development of avant-garde art, Klimt’s commissions dwindled. Rather than conform, he resigned from the Viennese Artist’s Association and began the Vienna Sezesscion in 1897. His portrait work continued to be popular throughout his life, and he also received private commissions for his interior designs and art. Klimt’s paintings combined erotic subject matter with ornamental aspects of Art Nouveau.
