Artist: Franz Kline (1910 - 1962)
Nationality: American
Movement: Abstract Expressionism
Media: Painting
Influences:
Biography: Franz Kline began his career as a painter creating urban landscapes and other realistic subjects. Towards the end of the 1940’s, he turned to abstraction after being influenced by Willem de Kooning. He developed his own unique style, using large brushstrokes to create bold black and white patterned paintings. He did not begin using color in his paintings until late in his life but always preferred black and white. Kline died of heart disease in 1962 and is remembered as one of the most original Abstract Expressionists.
