Biography:
Philips Koninck was born to a wealthy goldsmith in Amsterdam. He apprenticed with his older brother in Rotterdam for four years beginning in 1637 before returning to Amsterdam to study with Rembrandt van Rijn. He also owned a shipping company and an inn. Koninck’s paintings became purely compositional in the 1650’s and rarely were derived from a recognizable location. He stopped painting after 1676 because of his obligations to Amsterdam’s public affairs. His surviving body of work consists of three hundred drawings and eight etchings.
