Biography:
Hans Suss van Kulmbach moved to Nuremberg around 1505 and became an apprentice to a painter and printmaker. He later entered the studio of Albrecht Durer with whom he collaborated, admired, but never imitated. Kulmbach became a Nuremberg citizen in 1511 and founded a workshop. He received Durer’s altarpiece commissions after he retired from the practice in 1510. He also painted three altarpieces for Cracow churches. His landscapes showed the romantic influence of Albrecht Altdorfer in 1515. He also created portraits and was a stained-glass designer.
