Biography: Born in France, Louis Laguerre spent most of his career in England. He trained under Le Brun in Paris and then moved to England in 1683. He first worked collaboratively with Verrio but then took off on his own decorating houses. He was more talented and personable than Verrio but only excelled in England. After 1710, Thornhill replaced him as the leading decorative painter. Laguerre’s later work consisted of portraits and historical paintings.
