Biography:
Born in Amsterdam, Pieter Lastman was the son of a goldsmith. He spent five years studying painting in Italy around the beginning of the 1600’s. He then returned home and began to paint dramatic narrative scenes from the Bible, mythology, and Roman history. He received recognition for his method of history painting and teaching Rembrandt van Rijn.
