Biography: John Lavery was orphaned at three, and lived with relatives in Scotland. He began a career of retouching photographs, but when his studio burned down, he used the insurance money to attend art schools in London and Paris. In 1885, he founded the Glasgow School, which used French Impressionist techniques. As well as landscapes and genre scenes, Lavery painted portraits, notably of Queen Victoria’s visit to Glascow in 1888. He was knighted in 1918 and worked in diplomacy between England and Ireland for much of the rest of his career.
