Biography:
Although he originally intended to become a painter, Gustave Le Gray was an influential figure in the development of photography. He was one of the firs to use the paper negative in France and also developed his own wax paper technique that allowed for sharper focus. Le Gray began using the collodion process in 1851 and became one of the first to work for the missions heliographiques, a government project to document French architecture. In addition, Le Gray was an influential teacher who inspired many future important French photographers. He helped found the Societe Heliographique in 1851 and joined the Societe Francaise de photographie. In 1860, Le Gray began traveling, first through the Mediterranean, then Lebanon, and finally Egypt where he became a drawing professor and remained there until his death in 1884.
