Biography:
Jean-Baptiste Le Prince was born into a family of ornamental sculptors and gilders. In 1750, he began working and living with Francois Boucher. Seven years later, he began painting at the Imperial Palace in Saint Petersburg. He traveled across Russia before returning to Paris five years later. Le Prince began creating paintings and etchings of the Russian landscape and countryside, introducing a new genre picture to the European market. He also perfected the aquatint technique. He joined the Academie Royale in 1755 and exhibited his paintings at Salon the same year. In 1700, Le Prince moved to the countryside because of declining health where he painted landscapes and pastoral scenes.
