Biography:
Born in Germany, Wilhelm Lehmbruck began working in a traditional manner. However, after living in Paris from 1910 to 1914, he formulated a more individualistic style. Some of his influences included Archipenko, Modigliani, and Brancusi. Lehmbruck returned to Germany at the start of World War I and worked in a hospital. During this period of employment, he witnessed much suffering and trauma, which was later reflected in his artwork and in his mental health. His sculptures were mostly carved from marble, but he also worked with clay. Unfortunately, Lehmbruck, Germany’s foremost Expressionist sculptor took his own life in 1919.
