Biography:
Born to Dutch parents in Germany and originally named Peter can der Faes, Lely took his name from his family home. He entered the guild of Saint Luke in Haarlem in 1637 before moving to London a decade later where he painted landscapes, religious scenes, and historical subjects. Lely was influenced by Anthony van Dyck and received many of his clients after his death. In 1661, he became the Principal Painter for the English monarchy and also oversaw their art collection. Lely’s studio managed to keep up with the increasing demand for his portraits.
