Biography: Originally named Claude Gellee, Lorrain was a peasant’s son who never received basic education. He began his devoted art career in Rome around 1617 and was influenced by the Northern European landscapists from Italy. After briefly studying in Naples, Claude joined Rome’s Accademia di San Luca in 1633. He was an influential landscape artist who mastered light in all of his works.
