Biography:
Born in England, James Edward Hervey MacDonald moved to Ontario with his parents at the age of fourteen. He studied in Toronto and jointed the graphic art company Grip in 1894. MacDonald also helped found the Arts and Letters Club in 1908. He exhibited in 1916 and the Toronto annual show, his painting The Tangled Garden receiving vicious attacks by critics. In 1920, MacDonald founded the Group of Seven, which disbanded after his death in 1932.
