Biography:
Nicolaes Maes learned to draw from a local artist in Dordrecht before moving to Amsterdam to train under Rembrandt van Rijn. He returned home and created his own reputation for painting intimate scenes of women and children. In 1660, Maes began creating portraits influenced more by Anthony van Dyck.
