Biography:
Known for this paintings and writings, Karel van Mander first trained with a poet and painter before moving to Italy from 1573 to 1577. He was inspired by the work of Giorgio Vasari and Mannerist artists. Van Mander returned to Holland only to find that religious persecution forced him to leave again. He traveled throughout the Netherlands and settled in Haarlem in 1583 where he founded an academy with Hendrick Goltzius. In 1604, his book Schilderboek was published and is still a main source on the Northern European painters of Van Mander’s time.
