Biography: John Marin originally pursued a career in architecture, training at the Pennsylvania Academy in Philadelphia and the Art Students’ League of New York. While working in this profession, Marin became interested in painting through his interaction with James McNeil Whistler. In 1910, he traveled to Europe and studied in Paris, Rome, and London. While exhibiting his work at the 291 Gallery in New York, Marin met the Stieglitz Circle. He briefly studied Cubism and Fauvism, which left their mark on his later oils, watercolors, and etchings.
