Biography: Simone Martini studied in the studio of Siena’s leading painter. He married another artist’s daughter at the age of thirty-seven, not long after he established a vast reputation. He was invited to Naples to paint the court and then was later summoned by the Franciscan friars in Assisi to paint the lower basilica of Saint Francis. He spent the end of his life in Avignon, France, working for the exiled papacy.
