Biography:
Paolo de Matteis was trained in the workshop of Luca Giordano in Naples before beginning a career in Rome. From 1702 to 1705, he was employed by the French court in Paris. He was hired by the third Earl of Shaftesbury in 1712 and then lived in Rome from 1723 to 1725 while working on a commission from Pope Innocent XIII.
