Biography:
Anton Raphael Mengs began studying art at the age of twelve. He traveled to Rome and stayed there for four years. He then returned to Dresden and achieved success as a pastel portrait painter. He traveled to Rome in 1746 and began using oils and converted to Catholicism. He spent the majority of his life in Italy after that where he painted altarpieces, frescos, and Grand Tour portraits. He was admitted to the Accademia di San Luca in Rome and taught at the Accademia del Nudo.
