Biography:
Born in Florence, Michelangelo studied briefly under Ghirlandaio before his talent was recognized by the public. He began sculpting for Lorenzo di Medici in 1490 and then the papacy. Michelangleo’s commissions soon piled up, most of which either required long periods of time or were abandoned midway through. Since Michelangelo felt that his true talent was as a sculptor, he was hesitant to undertake the Sistine Chapel ceiling project. However, when finished, the ceiling frescoes and the altar wall piece, the Last Judgement, which accompanied it are two of the most renowned pieces of Western art.
