Artist: Jean-francois Millet (1814 - 1875)
Nationality: French
Movement: Barbizon School
Media: Painting
Influences:
Biography: Jean-Francois Millet studied under Delaroche, learning his naturalistic approach to tranquil and pastoral scenes and portraits. Critics were unsettled by the unromantic depictions of rural life, and in the 1850’s, the French government became paranoid of the political and socialist messages his paintings might suggest. After making the acquaintance of Rousseau in 1849, Millet joined the Barbizon School and converted to landscapes.
