Biography:
George Minne studied architecture at the Ghent Academy and then progressed to take courses in painting and sculpture. He began exhibiting in 1887 and was recognized by Symbolist authors such as Maurice Maeterlinck who asked him to illustrate their writings. Minne returned to his native Belgium in 1891 and worked for his father who was an architect. He married and went bankrupt not long after. In 1895, he spent a year studying at the academy in Brussels and then began creating his more successful work. His small scale sculptures show influence of Gothic art and the Pre-Raphaelites and in turn, he was very influential on later artists in Belgium, France, and Germany.
