Biography: Francesco Mochi began his career by working in the prosperous cities in Italy such as Rome, Florence, Piacenza, and Orvieto. His close relationship with a upper class Farnese family helped him gain many commissions. He worked on equestrian statues for seventeen years for the duke of Parma and his father before returning to Rome in 1629. Overshadowed by Bernini’s Baroque sculpture that prevailed in Rome, Mochi received very few commissions. As his work fell out of fashion and Bernini and Algardi’s sculpture became the desire of most patron, Mochi fell out of the running and died with the reputation of being bitter and jealous.
