Biography: Gustave Moreau was a withdrawn watercolorist who lived alone in Montmartre for the majority of his life and career. He preferred to paint mythological subjects, symbolist work that is thought to be a forerunner of surrealism. Although his art was never exhibited after 1886, word of his talent was spread. In 1892, he was given a painting professor position at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, where he taught future talents such as Matisse and Rouault.
