Biography: After studying architecture in his hometown of Santiago, Chile, Roberto Sebastian Matta Echaurren traveled to Paris to train under Le Corbusier. He began painting in the Surrealist style in 1937, and was a leading figure of the movement. His debut came at the Julien Levy Gallery in 1940, shortly after Matta moved to the United States. His distinctive interpretation of Surrealism and random painting technique influenced later generations of Abstract Expressionists such as Pollock and Gorky.
