Biography:
Aert van der Neer worked as a steward before becoming a painter. His brothers-in-law were painters and his first work in 1632 displays similar stylistic elements. From 1659 to 1662, Van der Neer owned a tavern and then went bankrupt not long after, reaping little value from his assets. Despite financial stress, he continued to paint until his death in 1677. He never received much attention for his work during his lifetime but was discovered by scholars later for his use of space and atmosphere.
