Biography: Kenneth Noland moved to Washington in 1949 and made the acquaintance of Morris Louis. The two visited New York in 1953 where they were influenced by the work of Helen Frankenthaler. After experimenting with her method of painting, they took up Color Field Painting and originated their own division of the movement called the Washington Color Field Painters. After 1950, Noland began using more geometrical forms and eventually became a leading artist of the Hard Edge Painting technique. Under the influence of colleague Anthony Caro, Noland began creating sculpture in 1966.
