Biography:
James Northcote was born in Plymouth where he taught himself to paint and write. He moved to London in 1771 and began studying under Reynolds. He spent the years between 1770 and 1780 in Italy where he took up historical painting, creating many pieces for Boydell’s Shakespeare Gallery. His portraits were similar to Reynolds’s but were less inspired. However, he excelled as a writer, publishing his most famous work, Memoirs of Sir Joshua Reynolds in 1813.
