Biography:
Gilles-Marie Oppenord was the son of ebeniste, Alexandre-Jean Oppenordt, and grew up in his father’s apartment in the Louvre. He trained in Italy and studied architecture, with an emphasis on Roman monuments. He returned to France and became the Director of Buildings to the duc of Orleans in 1708, a position that elevated his reputation. Oppenord designed the duc’s palaces, decorated the interior and all of its furnishings. Not long after, he began receiving commissions for many other private projects. He was also hired by the Roman Catholic Church as the chief architect of the Church of Saint-Sulpice in Paris. At the end of his career, Oppenord designed letters and borders for books that were engraved and published after his death in 1742.
