Biography: Pierre-Adrien Paris’s father was the official architect and topographer for the court of the prince-bishop of Basel. He moved to Paris in 1760 to study under an architect. In 1769, he moved to Rome as the tutor of his teacher’s son and attended the Academie de France. He then traveled throughout Italy, taking interest in the antiquities in Pompeii, Paestum, Herculaneum, among other cities. Paris returned to France with a portfolio of architectural drawings that helped him win employment. In 1778, Louis XVI appointed him dessinateur and gave him the job of decorating court events, theater, and funerals. He also designed state sets for the Paris Opera. Paris joined the Academie Royale in 1780 and later was the interim director of the Academie de France in Rome under Napoleon. In the last two years of his life, Paris spent his time cataloguing his collection of paintings and antiquities.
